Empowering people, elevating outcomes: The leadership behind LifeHealthcare’s Sales Team of the Year

Casey's journey: from self doubt to leading one of our top performing teams
At EBOS MedTech, our strength lies in the people across our specialist businesses, from surgical support to innovative biotechnology manufacturing and everything in between.
Here is one of their stories.
Leadership isn’t just about titles; it’s about the way you show up every day.
For Casey Mayes, Divisional Sales Manager for Plastics & Reconstruction at LifeHealthcare, an EBOS MedTech company, this means combining strategic oversight with a hands-on approach that ensures her team add value in every interaction, and the surgeons have support to deliver life-changing outcomes for their patients.
Casey leads a high-performing sales team responsible for delivering advanced surgical solutions for aesthetic and reconstructive procedures, a team that recently earned the coveted ‘Sales Team of the Year’ award for FY25.
Her work spans everything from strategy and supplier development to partnering with internal stakeholders for planning and resourcing purposes, ensuring our customers, and more importantly their patients are able to perform surgery. She is also often the calm voice of experience when things get challenging in the field for the team
“You have to know the pressures your team faces,” she says. “In Plastics & Reconstruction procedures, our customers expect perfection. We are supporting bespoke elective surgery procedures or cancer patients on a challenging journey - there is little appetite for deviating from absolute quality, and why should there be? We should deliver to these levels. As a team, and business unit, we must be prepared, precise, and united, preempting our customers every need.”
A culture built on care, grit and connection
Over the past 12 months, Casey has placed a deliberate focus on team culture, something she sees as the foundation for sustainable performance.
Her approach is rooted in building a collegial, collaborative, and supportive environment, where no one is left to face challenges alone. If a hurdle appears on the horizon, the team rallies together to work out solutions.
“There’s no hierarchy here, it’s simply, ‘What can I do to help you get the job done?’” Casey explains. “Everyone rolls their sleeves up. It might be a big business, but it feels like a close-knit one, where everyone looks out for each other and where people genuinely ask, ‘How can I help?’ There’s no navel-gazing. It’s all about removing barriers for our team and our customers and doing what needs to be done.”
She encourages everyone to bring their own unique style rather than fitting into a mould. “I don’t sign up for a cookie cutter approach. That’s what makes an amazing team, different strengths, shared purpose.”
Clarity, ownership, and adaptability
Casey believes a great team starts with a shared compass, a clear aligned strategy, goal, and purpose that’s co-created, not dictated.
From that shared purpose, each team member develops their own individual business plan for their territory. This means when inevitable curveballs arrive, they can adapt quickly without losing sight of the bigger picture.
“They know the plan, and they can flex in whatever direction they need to manage it, but they stay the course. That’s how we keep moving forward and evolving.”
From imposter syndrome to authentic leadership
Casey is candid about the fact that stepping into this leadership role wasn’t without its challenges.
“When I first took on the role, I had a huge case of imposter syndrome. The person before me had been in this industry for 10 years+, and I thought, ‘I’m never going to be able to deliver at that level with that depth of knowledge and level of respect, but I’ll dig deep and do my best’. That changed when a mentor told her: “You don’t have to step into anybody else’s shoes, just wear your own... they are fabulous!”
“That stuck with me,” Casey says. “No matter the role, you can shape it and make it your own. Just because something’s always been done a certain way doesn’t mean it’s the only or best way. You can always improve it. Evolution is progression.”
Her advice for others? “Those little one-percenters along the way matter. Step into it, own it, embrace the uncomfortable... that’s how you grow.”
Responsiveness and trust
In a high-pressure, fast-moving environment, responsiveness is vital. Casey’s team has built habits to ensure no one is left waiting for answers, whether it’s through quick WhatsApp messages or informal check-ins.
“They know they’re never alone, and they’ve all got each other’s backs,” she says.
For Casey, skills can be taught, but being an exceptional communicator and a true team player is non-negotiable.
Why it matters
Behind every successful plastic and reconstructive surgery procedure is a chain of expertise, coordination, and trust. It takes a dynamic team across multiple functions to support a single procedure, the majority of it invisible to the end user. But it is the invisible support that is the most critical, and through shared leadership, we ensure that the chain never breaks.
“It’s a privilege to know our work supports surgeons in their endeavours to help patients recover from a traumatic cancer diagnosis, restoring natural form and function, whatever the patient's journey, rebuilding patients’ confidence in themselves... which is the true definition of beauty - from the inside out. It’s truly rewarding!”
